Society of the Snow – A Karmic Journey to Liberation
A story the captivated the whole world
In the frostbitten embrace of the Andes, lies a tale that transcends time, space, and the physical bounds of our world. This story, recently re adapted into a film by J. A. Bayona for Netflix, revisits the harrowing yet enlightening journey of a Uruguayan rugby team with family members and other friends of these rugby players, whose plight in the snow-clad peaks mirrors an ancient karmic cycle rooted in the passing of all the crew members of an Ottoman ship during its voyage across the Indian Ocean. This event took place in the late XVI century while their rivalry with the Portuguese Navy was still present.

Echoes from the Past: The Ottoman Ship’s Odyssey
In an era long gone, an Ottoman ship sailed the tumultuous waters of the Indian Ocean. The crew, facing adversities akin to those in the Andes, relied on powerful habits of prayer and fasting. Just as highlighted in the Bible “This kind can come out only by prayer and fasting” (Mark 9:29), to endure their trials. This ancient ordeal, it’s posited, set a karmic precedent, echoing through time to the Andean slopes.
The Miracle of the Andes: A Modern Reflection
This narrative finds its contemporary counterpart in the ordeal of the Uruguayan rugby team, hierarchically ensembled in a similar way to the Ottoman fanatical crew at that time. Stranded in the vast, merciless expanse of the Andes mountain peaks, the team’s experience closely mirrors those circumstances and were bound by the common threads of faith, endurance and a fight for survival against insurmountable odds. All very close in terms of the setting but with a radical difference, the climate conditions. Opposite to the unbearable hot they had to withstand in those waters.
Spiritual Transcendence Amidst Harsh Reality
Of the 45 passengers aboard the ill-fated flight, only 16 survived alive in the physical sense at the very end. Yet, three souls – Arturo Nogueira, Gustavo Nicolich, and Numa Turcatti – embarked on a journey beyond the physical realm. These three transcended to a higher dimension and emerged beyond the accident, not by descending downwards the slopes of the Andes but through an ethereal ascent beyond the mountain’s peaks towards Heavens.
The Ultimate Sacrifice: Love and Service
In a poignant twist of fate, these three injured individuals, in separate yet eerily similar circumstances, offered their lives for the greater good of the group. This act wasn’t merely a sacrifice; it was a culmination of a karmic circle that began centuries ago on the Ottoman ship. This time, however, the underlying principle was not only survival but love and service, leading to their extraordinary transcendence.
Enlightenment at the Edge of Existence: A Lesson in Sacrifice
Just as they neared their physical end, Noguera, Nicolich, and Turcatti achieved enlightenment, a state of being that transcended the corporeal boundaries of life and death. Their journey, thus, wasn’t one of mere survival but of spiritual awakening and liberation. The crucial role played by these three in the overall survival of the group is undeniable. Yet, in a broader, more spiritual sense, they were the true victors. While others were granted an extension in their earthly journey, these three embraced a higher calling. Their sacrifice became the cornerstone of their collective salvation and a testament to the power of selfless love and service.
In conclusion, “Society of the Snow” is not just one of the most epic tales of survival; it is a profound exploration of karmic cycles and spiritual liberation. It reminds us that sometimes, the harshest journeys lead to the most enlightening destinations and the greatest sacrifices pave the way for the highest transcendence. In the icy peaks of the Andes and the suffocating humidity of the Indian Ocean, lies a timeless lesson in endurance, faith and the eternal quest for spiritual freedom.
